A Keyed Vielle” – Construction of the Instrument from a Fresco by Taddeo Di Bartolo – Siena (Italy), 1408

Abstract:
The only know Italian picture of a keyed vielle (viola a chiavi) is to be found on a beautiful fresco by Taddeo di Bartolo in the Cappella of the Palazzo Comunale di Siena. It is dated 1408, and is therefore one of the very first known images of a keyed vielle worldwide. Silver Plachesi constructed this instrument. In this article he describes his approach and the steps to the finished instrument.
